Challenges of Spain, as Pope Benedict XVI responds
For your interest, we reproduce the Pope's welcoming address to the new Ambassador of Spain to the Holy See, Maria Jesus Figa Lopez-Palop.
Madam Ambassador:
Al
receiving the credentials attesting to Your Excellency as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Spain to the Holy See, I cordially thank him the words he has seen fit to address, and the respectful greetings to me transmitted by Their Majesties the King and Queen, the Government and the English people. Gladly reciprocate by expressing my best wishes for peace, prosperity and spiritual well-being for all of them, whom I have very much in the remembrance and prayer. Receive a warm welcome to start their important task in this diplomatic mission, which has centuries of proud history and its many illustrious predecessors. I
recently visited Santiago de Compostela and Barcelona, and I remember with gratitude all the attention and expressions of intimacy and closeness to the Successor of Peter by the English and their authorities. There are two landmarks, in which highlights both the spiritual appeal of the Apostle Santiago, as the presence of signs that invite you to look impressive upward even in the midst of a plural and complex environment.
During my visit I have seen many signs of the vitality of the Catholic faith in these lands, which have seen the birth of many saints, and are sown cathedrals, care centers and culture, inspired by the prolific roots and loyalty of its inhabitants to their religious beliefs. This also entails the responsibility of diplomatic relations between Spain and the Holy See which aims to advance always with mutual respect and cooperation, within the legitimate autonomy in their respective fields, all that gives rise to the good of the people and authentic development of their rights and freedoms, including the expression of their faith and conscience, both in public and in private.
For his significant career in the diplomatic activity, Your Excellency is well aware that the Church, in the exercise of its mission, seeks the integral good of each nation and its citizens, acting within the scope of their responsibilities and fully respecting the autonomy of civil authorities to appreciating and by asking God to exercise generosity, honesty, wisdom and justice, their service to society. This framework that shaped the mission of the Church and the State's role has also been reflected in bilateral agreements between Spain and the Holy See on the major issues of common interest, which provide the legal support and the stability needed for their respective actions and initiatives to benefit all.
the beginning of his great responsibility, Madam Ambassador, takes place in a situation of great global economic difficulty gripping as to Spain, with results truly disturbing, especially in the field of unemployment, which causes disappointment and frustration in young people and disadvantaged families. I have a strong presence to all citizens, and ask the Almighty to enlighten those who have public responsibilities to look boldly the path of profitable recovery the whole society. In this regard, I note with satisfaction the meritorious action that Catholic institutions are doing to go swiftly to help the most needy, while I pray for a growing willingness to everyone's cooperation in this effort of solidarity.
With this, the church shows an essential feature of its being, perhaps the most visible and appreciated by many, believers or not. But she intends to go beyond the mere external support and material, and target the heart of Christian charity, for which the neighbor is first and foremost a person, a child of God, always in need of friendship, respect and acceptance in any situation where you are.
In this sense, the Church offers something that is innate and that benefits people and the nations, offers Christ, hope that encourages and strengthened, as an antidote to the disappointment of other proposals and a heart shooting lacking in values, which ends hardened to the point of not knowing the genuine sense and meaning of life and why of things. This hope gives life to trust and collaboration, thereby changing this bleak in strength of mind to face forward to the future of both the individual and the family and society.
However, as I mentioned in my Message for the celebration of World Day of Peace 2011, rather than live and organize society such a way that favors openness to transcendence (cf. n. 9), there are also ways, often sophisticated, hostility against faith, that "sometimes expressed denying history and religious symbols, in which reflect the identity and culture the majority of citizens "(n. 13). That in certain environments tend to be viewed religion as a socially insignificant factor, and even annoying, does not justify trying to marginalize it, sometimes through denigration, ridicule, discrimination and even indifference to clear episodes of desecration, for thus violates the fundamental right to religious freedom inherent dignity of the human person, and that "is a true weapon of peace, because it can change and improve the world" (cf. n. 15).
In its concern for each concrete human being and in all its dimensions, the church looks after their basic rights, open dialogue with all contributors to be effective and without reduction. Ensures the right to human life from its beginning to its natural end, because life is sacred and no one can dispose of it arbitrarily. Ensures the protection and family support, and advocates for economic, social and legal order that man and woman who marry and form a family have the support necessary to fulfill its vocation to be a sanctuary of love and life . Also calls for an education that integrates the moral and religious values according to the convictions of parents, as is their right, and as befits the development of youth. And, for the same reason, also including the teaching of the Catholic religion in all schools for whom the choice, as is precepts of law itself.
Before concluding, I wish to refer to my return visit to Spain to participate in Madrid, next August, in celebration of XXVI World Youth Day. I join with joy and prayers to the efforts of its organizers, who are preparing carefully this important event, in the hope that bear abundant spiritual fruit for youth and for Spain. I also know the availability, cooperation and generous assistance that both the National Government and regional and local authorities are dispensing for the best success of an initiative to attract attention around the world and show once again the greatness of heart and spirit of the English.
Madam Ambassador, I do my best wishes for the performance of the lofty mission entrusted to it, so that relations between Spain and the Holy See to consolidate and progress, while I assure you the high regard that the Pope by the ever dear people of Spain. We likewise pray you to convey my sentiments to the Kings of Spain and other authorities of the nation, I invoke the abundant blessings of the Almighty on Your Excellency, your family came today, as well as their collaborators and the noble English people.
